Using Apple Cider Vinegar to Trap Fruit Flies

  • Take a bowl or pan with large surface area and enough depth to drawn fruit flies.
  • Put apple cider vinegar till the depth which will be sufficient to trap fruit flies.
  • Add 2-3 drops of liquid soap.
  • Now, wait.

Apple cider vinegar’s strong fruity smell attract fruit flies fast. Liquid soap drops break the surface tension. So, when fruit flies try to land on the surface, they will dive and won’t be able to come out.

Using Yeast as Super Bait

The smell of yeast also attracts fruit flies. Add half cup of warm water + 1 tablespoon sugar to jar. Still 1/4 tsp dry yeast. Add 2-3 drops of liquid soap. This trap uses the same logic as above to trap fruit flies but it’s faster because this smell is more favorite to fruit flies.

DIY Trap: Ripe fruit + paper cone.

  • Take a smelly, overly ripe fruit such as banana or guava. Cut it in pieces.
  • Put it in a jar and create a paper cone.
  • Put the paper cone at the top of jar, essentially mounting it to the jar’s rim so it’s bottom stay raised.
  • Now, fruit flies will get to the bottom using narrow side of the cone to get to the fruit. But they won’t be able to get out and hence, will get trapped.

Store-bought options

  • There are many store bought products you can get to do the job effectively. You’re looking for sticky cards, wine or vinegar bait-traps. You can also get UV light traps which will be effective especially at night.

How to Get Rid of Fruit Flies Outside

The logic you need to follow to get rid of fruit flies outside is to remove what attracts then. And, the list is not very exhaustive. They gets attractive by rotting, sugary, fermenting stuff.
