In 2013, developers created Old School RuneScape from a backup copy of RuneScape from 2007. This allowed traditionalist to enjoy the classic version of RuneScape. The entire game is now available to play once again.
The Old School team is a small, yet dedicated team that has concentrated on developing and expanding the Old School RuneScape into a separate branch of the RuneScape family. The creators essentially created an alternate timeline. When MMO evolved in a different direction, the 2007 RuneScape fell behind; however, with the game transformation, gamers will notice entirely new content, engine upgrades and quality of life changes. The changes are great, but not so much that gamers should be concerned.

How to Create an Account
Creating and setting up an account is quite simple. Visit the Old School RuneScape website and click New User. Clicking this link will send you to the sign-up page. In order to sign up, you will need a valid email address and provide your username and date of birth. Once this is completed, there are only two more steps to do before you can begin playing the game.
Download the Game and Log In
You will want to ensure that your computer is running the latest Java version. You can determine this by visiting Java and click verify version. If your Java is out of date, you will need to download and install the latest Java update. Simply follow the onscreen instructions. Once you have the latest Java version, it is time to download Old School RuneScape. Go back to Old School RuneScape and download the software.
After you have installed Old School RuneScape, it will be time to log in. Click the button located at the bottom left corner of the open world select screen. Log in using the username and password that you set up when creating your account. The areas with a silver star are free to play. Those areas with a gold star are available to paying members. After you choose a wold, you will click the existing user and enter your email and password. After this, you are in the club and ready to begin.
Getting Started
You will begin by customizing your avatar. Once this is complete, you will go to Tutorial Island. Although many gamers want to skip this step, it does help out. So, spend some time here getting to learn the controls of Old School RuneScape.
There are several different tutorials to teach the basics of gameplay, including RuneScape’s combat system as well as a few skills like learning the various interface functions, including your friends’ list. Throughout the tutorial, you will collect survival equipment and a set of basic combat commands. Once you have finished and graduated from Tutorial Island, you will be teleported to Lumbridge. Improving Your Skills
Nonmember Old School RuneScape players can access 15 skills, including Magic and Woodcutting. Hover your cursor over the skill that you are interested in and you will see how much experience you need to level up. Click on the skill to open up a guide that shows abilities and items will be unlocked at each new level.
For your first dungeon adventure head west towards Barbarian Village. There, you will discover the Stronghold of Security. This area is themed after the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The dungeon is divided into four floors. The monsters in this area range from level 5 goblins to level 159 shades. This means that you can always find a challenging fight, no matter your level. While you are here, have your knowledge of account security tested as well. There is a reward room hidden on each level. You will be able to receive a one-time prize of 10,000 coins and unlock a new emote. The fourth and final room allows you to choose between either a pair of combat boots or fancy boots.
If you prefer combat, head eastward and cross River Lum. Here, you will find an area overrun with goblins. This area allows you to practice your ranged, magical and melee combat without being scared of becoming overwhelmed. Begin Questing
Quests are a great way to gain experience while you are exploring the world. Lumbridge offers a large variety of beginner quest, including Sheep Shearing, which introduces you to the Crafting skill. To begin, speak with Fred the Farmer at the farm located in the northwest area of Lumbridge Castle.
Rune Mysteries offers a quest where you can open the Runecrafting skill. After you finish this quest, you will be able to create runes so you can perform spells. Speak with Duke Horacio. Duke is located on the second floor of the Lumbridge Castle.
If you get stuck while doing a quest, open the journal and click on the name of the quest in your Quest Log. This will describe everything you have done so far in the quest and will give you a hint on what you should do next. These journals also show the level requirements needed for each quest. How to Make Friends
After you have completed a few quests and leveled up your skill, you may begin to feel lonely. Now is the time to make some friends. The easiest way to do this is to head to one of the game’s popular areas and begin talking with other players. Lumbridge is filled with newcomers. Varrock is the social hub for questing and trading thanks to the Grand Exchange.
However, the best way to make new friends is to join a clan. You can join a clan at the Old School Clan forum. Here, you will find a thread called Looking for a Clan. You can enter some information about yourself and the type of clan that you are looking to join.
If you want to take an active role in finding a clan, scour the Clan Directory. Here, the clans will be listed along with the type of activities that they are involved in. Some clans are primarily for socializing, while others will concentrate on leveling up and PvP. Take your time and find a clan that suits your interest. Soon, you will have tons of new friends.
