Airpods are the most comfortable and compatible gadgets when they act right. They seamless cont nects with out iPhones, they smoothly play songs without delay, they seamless start charging as soon as we put them back in the case. When they act normal, we think that these devices are made too simple, what could be the problem that ever can arrive in the airpods. But, don’t let the simplicity at the interface level fool you because inside, is a really picky technology which, when decides to not act right, can ruin quality of your lifestyle within a day. 

When that happens, most users try to reset their airpods which, most of the times, resolves the issue but not always. So, here, in this article, we will check when it’s right to reset your airpods to resolve the issue and when it’s not. Then, I will obviously go ahead to give step by step guide on how to reset your Airpods, whether they are Airpods 1st gen, Airpods 2nd gen,  Airpods Max, Airpods Pro or any other device version.

When to Reset Your Airpods (and When to Avoid)

Though it’s important to know when to reset your Airpods but it’s even more important to know when to avoid it because doing such heavy resetting or connection re-optimizations has been proven to make the situation worst for many Apple Airpods users.

So, resetting your Airpods make sense if you encounter following problems –

Sound problems in Airpods –

  • One Airpod sounds louder than the other. And, not only with one song but with all types of situation such as on audio call, facetime or video call, while on meeting, listening to all types of movie and music. Some songs are specifically designed to send louder voice to one earpiece and quieter in another one. So, beware.
  • Audio sounds muffled, distorted or glitch even after re-connecting or turning the Airpods on and off.
  • Volume automatically keeps dropping
  • Features like spatial audio or Noise cancellation isn’t working in desired way

Connection Issues in Airpods –

  • Airpods won’t connect, taking too much time in establishing connection or keep disconnecting automatically frequently.
  • The error messages such as “Airpods not connected” or “Device Connection Failed” or “Connection Unsuccessful” keep popping up.
  • Your Airpods keep connecting to the wrong device which you’ve connected earlier.
  • If you are facing Very high latency. Sound delay is too annoying.

Detection Issues in Airpods –

  • The music doesn’t automatically gets paused when you remove Airpods
  • Gestures feel faulty. Double-tap/press gestures stop working
  •  You’re able to hear but your voice is not detected or vice verse.
  • Siri won’t respond to your commands

Charging Issues in Airpods –

  • The Airpods case doesn’t show charging light.
  • One Airpods doesn’t charge
  • Battery percentage readings feel wrong.
  • The battery life has decreased abruptly or feels unstable.

Software/Pairing Issues in Airpods

  • You are not able to rename your Airpods
  • Your Airpods  don’t change devices on demand.

And, when not to reset your Airpods?

Actually, jumping ahead with resetting your Airpods directly should not be your first option upon encountering any issue. So, before jumping straight ahead for it, try these easier steps first –

  • Clean your Airpods & Case.
  • Remove the carbon at the bottom of your earpieces or their slots in your Airpods case if charging issue persists because this is not a software issue, it is a hardware issue. Resetting your Airpods won’t help in this case.
  • Turn bluetooth off and back ON.
  • Restart your iPhone also to solve issues like connection issues, detection issues, high latency etc.

How to Reset Your Airpods

Now, if you’re in this section, I assume that you’ve gone through the fix I’ve provided above and now, it’s finally time to reset your Airpods as no other option left. I will continue but keep in mind that not all issues get resolved by resetting your Airpods. You might encounter that if the problem doesn’t resolve itself after setting, their might be some hardware issues or software issues that a user can’t fix on his own, he needs to bring Airpods to Apple service center.

Here’s step by step guide to Reset your Airpods –

  1. While Airpods are out from their case and connected to your iPhone/iPad, forgot them from from your Bluetooth device list.
  2. Tap forgot this device from iPhone, iPad and all the other devices that you’ve connected these Airpods with earlier.
  3. Put both Airpods back in its charging case and close the lid for 30 secs. Now, open the lid and keep it open.
  4. Now, There is a small button at the back of the case, Press & Hold it for 15 secs. You’ll see the led light on the charging case flashes amber and then white.
  5. White light confirms that your Airpods have been reset.
  6. Now, keep the lid open and connect with the first device, preferably the iPhone. Keep it close to iPhone, search for Airpods in Bluetooth section and Tap “Connect” when prompted.

Good job. Now, you’ve successfully reset your Airpods.

If you’ve got Airpods max, the steps changes like this –

  1. On Step #4, you need to press 2 buttons – Digital crown + Noise control button.
  2. Hold it for 15 secs and then, when your Airpods case shows Amber LED which turns to White. This confirms the reset.

Extra Troubleshooting Steps if Unsuccessful

If you’re still not able to resolve the issue, do the following steps –

  • Charge Case & Airpods for 15-20 mins in one go. Keep it undisturbed.
  • Check if the Airpods sit properly in the charging case.
  • If you’ve access to additional pair of Airpods, try their charging case to narrow down the issue.
  • Update device software.
  • Remove and reconnect to all the devices again.

If this doesn’t help, finally it’s time to contact the Apple Care as if the proper resetting of your Airpods fail and you’ve followed the extra troubleshooting steps, their is nothing extra you can do in constructive direction that will help the situation. Most of the time, they will be able to correct the issue without sending you the bill.
